ETOC announces tactical initiatives aimed at improving the performance of students in mathematics
The Education Transformation Oversight Committee (ETOC) has announced four tactical initiatives it believes can improve the poor performance of the island’s students in mathematics.
Chairman of ETOC Dr. Adrian stokes outlined the steps at a press conference this morning.
Only 39 % of students who sat the May / June Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) mathematics exam secured a passing grade.
Dr. Stokes said the results are not in line with the brighter future ETOC is hoping for in the education sector.
He said upon analysis, ETOC realized that students under-performed, had low attendance and were from low socio-economic communities.
Dr. Stokes said in an effort to improve the results ETOC has recommended extended learning hours, and extended teaching support, among other things.
Permanent Secretary in the ministry Dr. Kasan Troupe said the initiatives will be utilized this academic year in 56 secondary schools.
