Ethiopia Welcomes New Year 2019

Ethiopians are celebrating the start of a new year today, September 11, as the country welcomes 2019 according to the Ethiopian calendar.
The Ethiopian calendar differs from the Gregorian calendar used in most of the world and is approximately seven to eight years behind.
The calendar has 13 months, with 12 months consisting of 30 days each and a 13th month, known as Pagume, containing five days or six during a leap year.
The Ethiopian calendar is based on an ancient solar system and remains an important part of the country’s cultural and religious traditions.
Ethiopian New Year, known as Enkutatash, falls on September 11 in most years and marks the beginning of the new calendar year.
