EOJ says all systems are ready for tomorrow’s general election and local government by-elections

The Electoral Office of Jamaica (EOJ) has indicated that all systems are ready for tomorrow’s general election and local government by-elections.

Director of Elections Glasspole Brown said the EOJ has completed the printing of ballots and voters’ lists and distributed ballot boxes and supplies.

Mr. Brown said returning officers commenced the meeting with their teams on Sunday, with the final set of briefings held today.

Voting will take place in 7,294 polling stations in 2,153 locations across the island.

The polls will open at 7 A.M. and close at 5 P.M.

Thereafter, the preliminary counting of ballots will take place inside the polling stations.

There are 190 candidates.

184 are contesting the general election, while six are contesting the local government by-elections for the Chancery Hall, Olympic Gardens and Denham Town divisions in the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC).

Four registered political parties are contesting the elections.

These include the country’s 2 main parties; the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and People’s National Party (PNP).

The others are the Jamaica Progressive Party (JPP) and the United Independents’ Congress (UIC).

The election will be observed by local observer group Citizens Action for Free and Fair Elections (CAFFE) and international missions from the Organization of American States (OAS), the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and smaller delegations including the British High Commission, the United States Embassy and the European Union.

The day’s activities will be monitored by the election centre, which is a hub for receiving and validating reports on incidents on the ground and providing resolutions, as well as issuing reports to the media where necessary.

The constituted authority, which comes into effect whenever an election notice is issued and has the ability to halt or void elections where deemed necessary, will oversee the election.

Electors who are still unclear about where to vote are being urged to go to the check my status page on the Electoral Commission of Jamaica’s website to find out which polling station they should cast their ballot.

They may also contact the EOJ’s office in their constituency or call the EOJ toll-free help line at 888-991-vote (8683).
