Minister of Water and Environment Matthew Samuda says action will be taken against persons who engaged in illegal sand mining operations at the Swift River Valley in Portland recently.
The minister toured the area yesterday.
Speaking during the tour, Mr. Samuda explained that the river provides water and opportunities for fishing and mining. However, if it is overused then there will be environmental impacts.
Mr. Samuda applauded citizens for reporting the issue and assured that the strongest legal action would be taken when such issues are encountered.
Mr. Samuda also noted that he will be convening a joint task force to complete an assessment of river mining.
