An elderly man died from tetanus following the passage of Hurricane Melissa.

Tetanus commonly called lockjaw is a serious disease of the nervous system caused by a toxin-producing bacterium.

Speaking at a press briefing yesterday, Principal Medical Officer and National Epidemiologist, Dr. Karen Webster-Kerr said the 71 year old Westmoreland man was injured by a nail.

She said another tetanus case remains under investigation.

Dr. Webster-Kerr is urging persons to get treated if they are injured.
