Education ministry seeking to increase the number of Cuban teachers it recruits

The Education Ministry will be seeking to increase the number of Cuban teachers it recruits as it expands the teaching of Spanish in primary schools.

Assistant Chief Education Officer in the school operation and school improvement services branch, Dr. Olivine Evans, indicated that not many Spanish teachers are available locally.

She said the ministry’s aim is to ensure that each primary school has at least one Spanish teacher.

29 Cuban teachers were recruited for the 2024/2025 academic year .

The majority of them will be teaching Spanish with 17 placed at the primary level and 4 at the secondary level.

The remaining 8 will teach Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Integrated Science.

Dr. Evans explained that 5 new schools at the primary and secondary levels will have Cuban teachers.

Those primary schools will be offering Spanish for the first time.

Dr. Evans indicates that the ministry has seen the positive impact of having the Cuban teachers in the system.
