Education Ministry says full investigation underway into two incidents which left a child dead and another wounded

The education ministry says a full investigation is underway into two incidents on Tuesday which left one child dead and another nursing wounds.

The ministry says it’s awaiting the official reports to ascertain further details.

The education ministry has expressed profound sorrow over the stabbing death of a grade seven student from Denham Town High School on Tuesday.

Omar Collie was stabbed to death, while on his way home from school.

A 14-year-old female student has been taken into custody.

The ministry is also reporting an incident at Oberlin High School, St. Andrew where a female student was attacked by another female student at the entrance of the school.

The student suffered multiple facial injuries and is receiving medical care.

Support is being offered to the families and grief counseling and psychological support to the affected students, staff and families at Denham Town High School and Oberlin High School.

Education Minister Dana Morris Dixon says violence in any form towards and by students must never be tolerated.

She states that the ministry will continue working with the Ministry of National Security and other agencies to create a culture of peace in places of learning.

The ministry says Dr Morris Dixon is committed to completing the review of the school safety policy.

In the meantime, the ministry will continue to review and strengthen measures aimed at fostering safe and peaceful school environments for all students and staff.

The government will intensify the citizen’s security programme and the deployment of school resource officers from the Jamaica Constabulary Force to support schools with high incidences of violence.

Additionally, the ministry, through its regional office has asked principals to increase their vigilance on the ground, intensify behaviour change efforts and remind students of the need to use conflict management skills.
