Education Minister says some schools reopened today
Education Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon says classes resumed at some schools across the island today.
Schools were closed ahead of hurricane Melissa’s arrival last Tuesday.
The category 5 system left many sections of the island in ruins, and damaged infrastructure including schools.
The Education Minister had indicated that schools which are able to, should resume classes today.
However, many took issue with this, noting that households, including students and teachers are still trying to pick up the pieces.
At a press briefing today, Dr. Morris-Dixon said school boards must assess the situation and decide if institutions should be reopened.
The Minister acknowledged that citizens will need psycho-social support and her ministry is able to provide this to students, parents and teachers.
Dr. Morris Dixon said the reopening of schools in western parishes, which were the worst affected, will take innovation and a team is focused on this.
She said a meeting regarding the reopening of schools will be held with several stakeholders tomorrow.
