ECJ not yet able to give timeline for completion of fieldwork to establish new St. Catherine boundaries

The Electoral Commission of Jamaica, ECJ says it cannot give a timeline for the completion of fieldwork to establish the new boundaries for St. Catherine.

This is in relation to work being done for Portmore to become Jamaica’s fifteenth parish.

Director of Elections Glasspole Brown gave the update at yesterday’s meeting of the Constituency Boundaries Committee of Parliament.

He said the ECJ has written to the Ministry of Local Government, to get the new boundaries for the redefined St. Catherine and this will be gazetted.

However, when questioned by committee members about how long the process will take Mr. Brown said the process has just begun and as such, he cannot commit to a timeline.

He said he is hoping to provide an update in May.

The next general election is expected to be called by September.

In light of this, committee member Edmund Bartlett expressed hope that the process will be completed with alacrity.
