E-TOC Chairman Dr. Adrian Stokes says bold choices are required by Gov’t to ensure proper funding is secured to rebuild following Hurricane Melissa
Chairman of the Education Transformation Oversight Committee (E-TOC) Dr. Adrian Stokes says bold choices are required by Government to ensure proper funding is secured to rebuild on the scale and speed required, following Hurricane Melissa.
He says the national budget cannot accommodate the scale of the financial capital needed to rebuild.
Dr. Stokes is suggesting that the Government enacts measures to crowd in private capital as part of its capital mobilizing strategy.
Highlighting that there are 689 schools requiring major repairs, Dr. Stokes suggested funding the building of schools through agreements with pension funds.
He says the damage from Hurricane Melissa has necessitated looking at how to rebuild with a focus on infrastructure investment.
The E-TOC Chairman states that the damage to schools has created an opportunity to rebuild modern fit for purpose learning environments, that can withstand severe weather systems.
Eight schools are slated to be rebuilt.
