DPP awaiting Appeal Court’s written decision following acquittal of Dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel and his co-appellants
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) says it will await the written decision of the Appeal Court, following the acquittal of Dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel and his co-appellants, yesterday.
Kartel, whose given name is Adidja Palmer, along with fellow artiste Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St. John were acquitted of the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.
In a statement, the ODPP noted that yesterday, at the close of the Easter term, the Court of Appeal ruled that the convictions of the appellants in the matter are quashed.
The court advised that it will provide a written summary of the reasons for its decision and a full written judgement will follow.
In its oral judgement made available via live stream for the public’s hearing and understanding, the court highlighted some of the factors which it assessed in coming to its decision.
The court ruled that the countervailing weight and the interests of justice are against a new trial being ordered.
The ODPP said it awaits both summary and full written decision, before it comments any further on the case.
