Distin and Gayle secure podium finishes for Jamaica at Paavo Nurmi Games
2022 Commonwealth Games champion Lamar Distin led the Jamaican contingent with a strong performance at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland on Tuesday, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event.
Distin delivered a composed showing in the women’s high jump, clearing 1.91 metres—the same height as eventual winner Morgan Lake of Great Britain—but had to settle for second place on countback. The result marks another significant podium for Distin as she builds towards the summer’s major championships.
In the men’s long jump, former world champion Tajay Gayle added to Jamaica’s medal tally, finishing third with a best leap of 7.97 metres, aided by a legal wind of +1.6 m/s. The event was won by Italy’s Mattia Furlani, who produced 8.11 metres to take gold.
There were solid efforts elsewhere from the Jamaican athletes in action. Omar McLeod, the 2016 Olympic champion, placed fourth in the men’s 110m hurdles, clocking 13.67 seconds in a competitive field.
In the women’s 800 metres, Adelle Tracey finished ninth, crossing the line in 2:03.12. Meanwhile, Rojay Stona, the reigning Olympic champion, was just outside the medals in the men’s discus, taking fourth place with a best throw of 66.84 metres.
