Digicel announces immediate closure of Loop News and plans to wind down SportsMax by Aug 8

Digicel has announced the immediate closure of its Caribbean-wide news platform Loop News and plans to wind down regional sports broadcaster SportsMax by August 8.

The telecoms giant says the move marks a strategic pivot away from consumer-facing content to a greater focus on enterprise solutions and digital services under its business arm.

Affected staff members are reportedly already informed of the closure, and transition support will be provided in line with labour laws.

Loop News was launched in 2014 as a popular regional digital news outlet, while SportsMax, founded in 2002, was home to a range of high-profile sporting content.

Group Chief Business Officer, Liam Donnelly, said the winding down is a strategic repositioning to ensure Digicel is best placed to deliver secure, scalable services for the future.

Donnelly said while Digicel is proud of the legacy of SportsMax and Loop News, it is now focused on where it can create the greatest value for its customers and the communities it serves.
