Descendants of former slave owners to issue formal apologies at emancipation jubilee event

As Jamaica continues to seek reparatory justice, notable descendants of former slave owners will issue formal apologies to the country.

A formal apology is one of the features of the Caribbean Community’s (Caricom) ten-point plan for reparatory justice.

Speaking at Jamaica’s 62nd Annual Independence Church service yesterday, Culture Minister Olivia Grange announced that these apologies will be presented at the emancipation jubilee event on July 31, at Seville Heritage Park in St. Ann.

Independence is being observed under the theme ‘Jamaica 62: One love…to the world’.

Jamaica will mark the 186th anniversary of the abolition of slavery in conjunction with its 62nd independence anniversary, with events taking place from July 31 to August 6.

The minister noted that this year’s celebrations have been scaled back as the country continues restoration and recovery efforts in the aftermath of Hurricane Beryl.
