Decision to be taken on resumption of classes at Oracabessa Primary School following fire last night

A decision is expected on the resumption of classes at Oracabessa Primary School in St.Mary, following a fire at the institution last night.

There could be a phased resumption as early as tomorrow.

Classes were suspended today due to the extent of the damage which affected a building housing the reading lab, a storage area for sports gear and a classroom.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Speaking to IRIE FM News, Principal Winsome Forbes stated that the National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA) will clear rubble from the school tomorrow.

Meanwhile, Member of Parliament for St. Mary Western, Robert Montague said that infrastructural upgrades planned for later this year will need to be brought forward.

Meanwhile, the Education Ministry has pledged its full support in restoring normalcy to the institution.

Portfolio Minister Dr. Dana Morris Dixon said her Ministry is acting urgently to provide assistance and identify alternative spaces to ensure students can resume learning without further delay.

She added that the Ministry’s Education Officer and a social worker visited the school today to offer immediate support to staff and assess the well-being of the school community.

Dr. Morris-Dixon further assured that the Ministry will continue collaborating with all stakeholders to expedite the recovery process.
