Data reveals surge in serious mental health diagnoses among children
There is an increase in the number of children between ages 13 and 14 who are diagnosed with serious mental health conditions.
This was revealed by substance abuse counsellor with the National Council on Drug Abuse, (NCDA), Lyrris Williams.
Miss Williams notes that some of the children are finding it difficult to cope, because of the constant stigma that arises from names and castigations levelled at them.
She says affected youth misuse substances to deal with the stigma, which also serves as a hindrance in recovery efforts.
She says persons who engage with those with mental health conditions, should speak to them respectfully and use language that is clear, understandable and free of labels.
Ms. Williams is calling on persons to end the stigma against individuals suffering from mental health issues and struggling with substance misuse issues.
