CRC says there is no need for impeachment stipulation in reformed constitution

There is no need for an impeachment process stipulation in the reformed Jamaican constitution.

The recommendation is among many made by the Constitutional Reform Committee, CRC and outlined in its report that was recently submitted to Parliament.

Committee chair, Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs, Marlene Malahoo Forte highlighted the issue, while making her contribution to the Sectoral Debate in Parliament yesterday.

She said the committee gave serious consideration to the concerns of many about the lack of accountability for parliamentarians.

She pointed out that those concerns may not necessarily be addressed through an impeachment or recall process so other measures of ensuring accountability will have to be implemented.

She also pointed out that in some cases impeachment is inconsistent with natural justice.
