CPFSA expresses profound sadness at suspected suicide of 13-y-o Hopewell High student
The Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) is expressing profound sadness at the passing of 13-year-old Twain Skyers.
The Student of Hopewell High School in Hanover, tragically lost his life in a suspected suicide on Thursday, September 11.
According to the CPFSA on the evening of Twain’s death, he arrived home approximately 2 hours late, despite being repeatedly warned by his mother to get home by 5:00 pm.
The CPFSA said his mother chastised him and left him to cool off in his room.
Sometime later she became concerned that she had not heard any sound coming from his room and went to check on him and found his door locked.
The door was forced open, and Twain was found unresponsive in the bathroom.
The mother and other family members rushed him to the Cornwall Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Chief Executive Officer of the CPFSA, Laurette Adams-Thomas, extended heartfelt condolences to the family, school community and all who are mourning Twain’s loss.
According to her, Twain was reportedly being bullied by a student from another school.
The most recent incident occurred on Monday, September 8, 2025 at the local bus park.
That incident saw the intervention of the Police, with both boys being taken to the Barnett Street Police Station, where they were warned and then released to their parents.
Mrs. Adams-Thomas urged the island’s students to talk to a Guidance Counsellor or a trusted adult when faced with abuse or bullying.
