Councillors in Manchester ask police to reconsider continued imposition of curfews
The Manchester Municipal Corporation has called on the police to reconsider its imposition of extended curfews in sections of the parish, citing adverse impact on commerce.
The call came from some divisional councillors, who raised concern about the extended curfews, during Thursday’s meeting of the corporation.
Over the past few weeks, areas such as Mandeville, Williamsfield, Porus and Christiana have been placed under repeated curfews and the restrictions mean many businesses have to close by as early as 6:00 p.m.
Mayor Donovan Mitchell noted that the restrictions are also hampering some social activities, to include church.
In response, sub-officer in charge of the community safety and security branch Inspector Berthlyn Lloyd defended the imposition of the curfews.
Inspector Lloyd cited the presence of migrant criminals in the parish as among the reasons for the restrictions.
She said until the police are able to get crime under control the curfews will remain in effect.
