Cops charged in relation to Mario Deane’s death found guilty; victim’s mother relieved justice served

“Relief!”

That’s the emotion expressed by Mario Dean’s mother, Mercia Fraser, after a seven-member jury returned a guilty verdict against the three police officers charged with his death in 2014.

Dean, who was 31 years old at the time, was allegedly beaten while in police custody on ganja-related charges.

He died days later in hospital.

Corporal Elaine Stewart and Constables Juliana Clevon and Marlon Grant, who were reportedly on duty at the time of the incident, were charged with manslaughter, misconduct in a public office and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

The cops were found guilty today after the jury deliberated for two hours.

Speaking with reporters after the verdict was handed down, Deane’s mother recounted her nervousness as she waited to see if justice would be served for her son.

She said she is grateful for today’s outcome as she had promised her son on his deathbed that she would pursue justice for him.

The cops are to return to court for sentencing on July 1.
