Constitutional reform committee to be established towards making Jamaica a republic
Minister of Legal and Constitutional Affairs Marlene Malahoo Forte has indicated that a constitutional reform committee is to be established, to do further deliberations on Jamaica’s constitution, ahead of any step being taken towards making Jamaica a republic.
Mrs. Malahoo Forte acknowledged the anticipation many have about Jamaica severing ties with Britain and the queen, and stated that a change is coming.
In her sectoral debate presentation today, the minister outlined the history of Jamaica’s constitution, and also explained, that while much work has already been done, there is much more to do, regarding a new constitution, and the country‘s bid for republic status.
She said ultimately the goal is to develop a constitution, enacted by the parliament of Jamaica.
Mrs. Malahoo Forte said, an update on the progress of the work being undertaken, will be brought to parliament, by the next session.
