Constitutional expert says social media could present a challenge to constitutional reform process
Constitutional expert Dr. Lloyd Barnett has suggested that social media could present a challenge to the government as it undertakes the constitutional reform process.
The bill to amend the Jamaican constitution to transition the country to a republic was tabled in the house of representatives in December 2024.
It seeks to abolish the constitutional monarchy and replace it with a Jamaican president as head of state.
It is expected that Jamaicans will decide on the issue in a referendum.
Speaking during a virtual panel discussion, Dr. Barnett noted the importance of having a wide consensus on the proposed changes.
He said while social media presents opportunities, it has the potential to impact the process negatively, by publicizing false statements.
