Constituents in NE St. Ann welcome Marsha Smith’s resignation as Member of Parliament
Some residents of Northeast St. Ann have welcomed the announcement by Prime Minister Andrew Holness of a by-election for the constituency, later this month.
This follows yesterday’s resignation of Marsha Smith as Member of Parliament. Smith was elected during the 2020 general election.
Many constituents cited a lack of presence and engagement in the community, by Ms. Smith. There were also demonstrations calling for her removal as an MP.
The residents are now hopeful of better representation.
Former Senator Matthew Samuda will replace Ms. Smith as the Jamaica Labour Party’s MP candidate.
Nomination day will be September 11, while the by-election will be held on September 30.
The Prime Minister made the announcement during Wednesday’s post-cabinet press conference.
