Coffee farmers impacted by Hurricane Melissa get boost with donation of fertilizer by JACRA

Coffee farmers impacted by Hurricane Melissa received a well needed boost with the donation of fertilizer by the Jamaica Agricultural Commodities Regulatory Authority (JACRA).

5000 bags of fertiliser valued at approximately $35 million were handed over during a ceremony, yesterday.

The Jamaica Coffee Growers Association and the Jamaica Coffee Exporters Association both received a combined 2 thousand bags of fertiliser, valued at approximately $10 million.

Hurricane Melissa caused widespread damage to coffee farms across blue mountain and high mountain regions, as such, the initiative aims to support farmers in restoring tree health, stabilising yields, and ensuring that Jamaica’s globally renowned coffee industry continues to thrive.

By providing immediate inputs and technical guidance, JACRA is working to ensure that farmers can recover and that the country’s premium coffee maintains its reputation for quality in the global market.

Speaking at the ceremony, JACRA’s Acting Director General, Wayne Hunter, highlighted the critical importance of the coffee sector to the country’s economy and the role of coordinated recovery efforts.

The Director General also reaffirmed JACRA’s ongoing commitment to supporting the coffee industry at every level.
