Co-hosts West Indies announce squad for ICC T20 World Cup
Rovman Powell has been named captain of the West Indies team that will seek the region’s third title at the upcoming ICC Men’s t20 World Cup, which will be co-hosted in the Caribbean and United States.
As well as Powell, the 15-member squad features pacer Shamar Joseph, who impressed in his Test debut series against Australia earlier this year and who is yet make his T20I debut and Shimron Hetmyer who makes a comeback after missing the T20I series against Australia but has been in good nick in the ongoing IPL with the Rajasthan Royals, scoring 83 runs in four innings at a strike rate of 184.44 while playing the finisher’s role.
Also included are Jamaicans Brandon King and Andre Russell as well as spinner Roston Chase and opener Johnson Charles who were selected from the West Indies A team named to face Nepal in the ongoing historic five-match T20 series which concludes on Saturday May 4.
Completing the squad are Alzarri Joseph (vice-captain), Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Akeal Hossain, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Sherfane Rutherford and Romario Shepherd.
Part of Group C alongside Afghanistan, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and Uganda, the two-time Champions will kick-start their campaign on June 2 against Papua New Guinea at Providence in Guyana after which they face Uganda on June 8 at the same venue.
They then play New Zealand at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad on June 12, before their last group game against Afghanistan in St. Lucia on June 17.
The tournament is scheduled to take place from June 1-29.
All teams are allowed to make changes to their squad until May 25, after which any alteration will require approval from ICC’s Event Technical Committee.
