Classes shifted online at Greater Portmore High over stench from sewage treatment plant in close proximity to school
Classes have been shifted online at the Greater Portmore High School in St. Catherine due to a stench from a sewage treatment plant in close proximity to the school.
It’s reported that teachers staged a sit-in at the school yesterday, resulting in students being dismissed early.
Speaking to IRIE FM News this morning, Head of the Jamaica Teachers’ Association Dr. Mark Smith said he is aware of the complaint by the teachers and stands in solidarity with them.
He described the situation as untenable.
Dr. Smith said the situation also raises significant concerns regarding planning.
In the meantime, Mayor of Portmore Leon Thomas said he too stands with the institution, noting that he has written to the National Water Commission (NWC) about the issue on numerous occasions.
Attempts by IRIE FM to contact NWC on the issue were unsuccessful.
