Clarendon Municipal Corporation meeting ends early due to contention about leadership

For the second time in as many months, the meeting of the Clarendon Municipal Corporation ended early due to contention about the leadership of the council.

This as Peoples National Party councillors insist that they should take control, based on the change in numbers following the recent by-election.

Both the PNP and the Jamaica Labour Party have 11 councillors.

This after the PNP’s Delroy Dawson defeated the JLP’s Suzette Barton in the November 22, 2024 by-election.

However, JLP councillors remain adamant that the by election did not change the leadership.

At today’s meeting, councillor for the Hayes division Scean Barnswell objected to having mayor Joel Williams continue as chairman of the corporation.

But Mayor Williams pointed out that the council meeting is not the place for discussion of the matter.

Mr. Barnswell doubled down on his objection, which led to Mayor Williams adjourning the meeting.
