Clarendon man linked to crime scene due to forensic evidence

A man who had been on the Clarendon police division’s most wanted list for the past six years has been charged after forensic evidence linked him to a 2019 robbery on Manchester Avenue in May Pen.

He is thirty-two-year-old Panif Broomfield, otherwise called ‘Chang’, a construction worker of Effortville in May Pen.

Reports are that at about 9:10 p.m., on Thursday, February 21, 2019 Broomfield was reportedly among a group of robbers who pounced upon a taxi operator and forced him into the back of his Toyota Probox motor car.

The robbers were attempting to flee the area when an off-duty police officer intervened.

A shoot out ensued.

During the exchange of gun fire, the taxi operator escaped by jumping from the vehicle.

The robbers also escaped.

The motor car was later found abandoned along Chapelton Road in the parish with bullet holes.

Both the vehicle and the scene were processed, during which spent casings and blood samples were retrieved.

The police were later alerted that a man, Broomfield, was being treated for gunshot wounds at a hospital.

Broomfield was interviewed and he reportedly claimed to be a victim of a shooting incident while he was walking along the road.

He was treated and released.

Forensic evidence later linked him to the crime scene after a thorough investigation was conducted by forensic crime scene investigators and the local police.

He was named on Clarendon’s most wanted list for the past six years. He was also featured on the JCF’s wanted Wednesdays.

On Tuesday, September 30, Broomfield surrendered to the police, accompanied by his attorney.

Yesterday, he was interviewed and formally charged with robbery with aggravation, two counts of shooting with intent, illegal possession of firearm and illegal possession of ammunition.

His court date is being finalised.
