Citizens to have a say on the matter of Jamaica’s final court this legislative year

Jamaicans will be able to have their say on the matter of the country’s final court during the 2025/2026 legislative year.

Custos of Kingston Steadman Fuller made the announcement this morning while delivering the Throne Speech on behalf of Governor General Sir Patrick Allen during the ceremonial opening of Parliament.

The Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) has been calling for the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) to be made Jamaica’s final appellate court, arguing that any move from the British monarch should also see Jamaica severing ties with the Privy Council.

Noting that the Constitution (Amendment) (Republic) Bill 2024, which was tabled in Parliament is being reviewed by a Joint Select Committee of both the Upper and Lower Houses, Custos Fuller said in this legislative year, the remaining steps will be taken to pass the bill.

He said citizens will be able to have their say on the matter of the country’s final court.

A related referendum bill will also be tabled.

Custos of Kingston Steadman Fuller, delivering the Throne Speech on behalf of Governor General Sir Patrick Allen also made announcements such as plans to improve financial, national security and health-related legislation among other things
