Chairman of Police Federation calls for readiness against expected deportations
With thousands of Jamaicans set to be deported from the United States, Chairman of the Jamaica Police Federation Sergeant Arleen McBean says every step has to be taken, to ensure that the constabulary force is ready to take on possible challenges.
US President Donald Trump has ordered the deportation of undocumented migrants, with over 5000 Jamaicans expected to be repatriated.
The first deportation flight from the US for 2025 arrived in the island last week.
Prime Minister Andrew Holness has also warned that deportees who attempt to disturb the peace, will either meet the judge in court or their maker.
According to Sergeant Mcbean, while the police have to be ready for the influx of deportees, the salaries of officer’s must compliment this readiness.
She said talks about capping the salary of public servants to a percentage of the Gross Domestic Product, (GDP) should be thrown out the window.
She also blasted those who would seek to undermine the work of the police.
She was speaking at the funeral service of Corporal Christopher Smith in St. Catherine on the weekend.
47-year-old Corporal Smith was shot dead during a gas station robbery, in St. Andrew, on December 6.
23–year-old Tremaine Harris, has been charged in relation to his murder.
