Central Bank and E-Gov Jamaica to implement digital payment system and digital public infrastructure

The Central Bank and E-Gov Jamaica will soon begin the implementation of a digital payment system and a digital public infrastructure.

These projects will be undertaken in collaboration with partners from India.

Jamaica and India signed agreements on the projects during a recent visit by Prime Minister Andrew Holness, Foreign Affairs Minister, Kamina Johnson Smith and Digital Skills Minister, Dr Dana Morris Dixon.

Giving an update to Parliament on Tuesday, Mr. Holness noted how India has capitalized on the use of technology to enable the identification of citizens and facilitate the convenient payment of social benefits to them.

Mr. Holness said Jamaica has an interest in adopting an electronic payment interface, similar to what India uses.

This would facilitate direct payments to citizens via their telephones, eliminating the need to join long lines at a Government office.

The Prime Minister added that the system would also prevent leakage.
