Cavalier wins Caribbean Cup after defeating Cibao FC on away goals

Cavalier FC are undisputed kings of Caribbean club football.

They achieved the feat after beating Cibao FC by away goals on aggregate after suffering a 2-1 loss on the road in the return leg of the Concacaf Caribbean Cup final played at Estadio Cibao FC in Sabtiago De Los Caballeros in the Dominican Republic.

Cavalier entered with a 1-0 lead after winning the first leg at the National Stadium. Shaquille Stein struck the goal in the opening encounter, extending his lead to eight as the leading scorer in the campaign.

However they were put on the back-foot by Cibao who took a 2-1 lead after first half goals from the penalty spot by Juan Diaz in the 27th and a header in the 28th by Rivaldo Correa.

Cavalier then fought back to level proceedings on the night with Dwayne Atkinson getting the all important goal in the 54th minute, striking the ball into the net to tie 2-2 on aggregate and retake control of the series on away goals.

Orlando Russell nearly put the series to bed in the 84’ for the visitors with a promising look inside the box but was wide of the left post.

More drama then ensued in the closing stretch as Jalmaro Calvin was denied by the right post after finding isolation inside the penalty area.

The result saw both teams tied at 2-2 across the two legs with the Jamaica Premier League champions claiming the Caribbean Cup title by virtue of the away goal rule.

Cavalier, runners-up in 2023, also walked away with the Fair Play award while four of their players swept the individual accolades.

Dwayne Atkinson – Best Player Award

Jalmaro Calvin – Youth Revelation Award

Vino Barclett – Best Goalkeeper Award

Shaquille Stein – Golden Boot Award

As tournament champions, Cavalier FC will begin the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup in the Round of 16.

Victory also sees them become the third Jamaican team to win the Caribbean Cup after Harbour View (2004 & 2007) and Portmore United (2005 & 2019).
