Canada’s Minister of Immigration, Marc Miller this morning announced the country’s new immigration plan which seeks to pause population growth in the short term.

The plan includes controlled targets for temporary residents, specifically international students and foreign workers, as well as for permanent residents.

It is expected to impact thousands of people from the region, including Jamaicans.

A press release on the official Government of Canada website explains that as Canada re-opened following the pandemic, businesses needed a greater supply of workers to support their recovery.

As such the government took decisive measures to attract persons to study and work in Canada. 

It says this meant a faster economic recovery.

The government however notes that in response to evolving needs, the country must now implement a transitional plan to alleviate pressures on housing, infrastructure and social services. 

In the first year of the plan, Canada intends to reduce approvals for permanent residents from 500,000 to 395,000.
