Cabinet approves terms for new electricity licence to be negotiated with JPS

Cabinet has approved a heads of terms for a new electricity licence to be negotiated with the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) subject to the execution of a non-disclosure agreement between the Government and the company.

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz gave the update during his contribution to the Sectoral Debate in Parliament yesterday.

Last year the Government formally notified JPS that it will not renew the current all-island electricity licence under the existing terms.

The existing licence is set to expire on July 8, 2027.

Mr. Vaz said the Electricity Act and the regulatory framework will be reviewed to give effect to the new licence regime.

The Energy Minister added that a White Paper on electricity sector reform has been drafted.
