Bunny Shaw Takes no.9 shirt as City prepare for clash with Chelsea

Reggae Girlz captain and star striker Khadija “Bunny” Shaw will sport a new look when the 2025-2026 Barclays Women’s Super League (WSL) season kicks off, having switched her jersey from number 21 to the coveted number 9 at Manchester City.

Shaw, who has been a prolific force in English football since joining City in 2021, will lead her side into a high-profile opener on the road against six-time defending champions Chelsea. The showdown, which features another Jamaican international in Chelsea goalkeeper Rebecca Spencer, is the lone fixture on the Friday’s opening day.

During her four seasons in Manchester, Shaw has rewritten the WSL record books, netting an astonishing 91 goals in just 106 appearances. She is already a two-time Golden Boot winner and holds the all-time record for most goals in a single season, with 31 strikes in the 2022-2023 campaign.

Last season, however, injuries restricted the 28-year-old to just 14 appearances. Despite logging only 892 minutes of league football, Shaw still managed 12 goals — enough to share the Golden Boot with Arsenal’s Alessia Russo, who played twice the minutes. Shaw’s scoring efficiency stood out globally: a goal every 74 minutes, the best return of any striker across the top women’s leagues in England, Spain, France, and Germany. Analysts projected that a fully fit Shaw would have finished with around 26 goals, comfortably surpassing the WSL single-season record of 22.

City, who finished fourth last term, 17 points behind Chelsea, will be under new leadership this season as Swedish coach André Jeglertz takes charge following the departure of Gareth Taylor.
