“Bring back the Reggae category” says Beenie Man in social media message to MOBO organizers
King of the Dancehall Beenie Man is calling for the organizers of the MOBO Awards to bring back the Reggae category, and give Dancehall its own category.
In a throwback video snippet shared with his over 925,000 followers on Instagram on Friday, the Dancehall heavyweight is seen accepting his third MOBO Award. In the caption, Beenie Man wrote, in part, “Let’s bring back the Reggae category. Let’s add a Dancehall category. The existence of life is to push forward and evolve.”
Beenie Man’s plight comes after the MOBO Awards replaced its Reggae category which was first issued in 1996, with the Best Caribbean Act to be more inclusive of popular genres like Soca and Calypso.
On November 30, Dancehall entertainer Skillibeng copped the 2022 MOBO Award for the Best Caribbean Act.
The MOBO Awards is a celebration of music of Black origin.
