BOJ says old cotton bank notes will be demonetized on July 1

Old cotton bank notes will be demonetized on July 1.

These are the 5000, 1000, 500, 100 and 50 dollar denominations.

The Bank of Jamaica gave notice of the move to demonetize the notes on April 1.

The BOJ advised that 3 months later, the old cotton banknotes will no longer be legal tender.

This means they cannot be used for transactions for goods and services as of July 1.

BOJ said  it will continue to redeem the old cotton banknotes for face value indefinitely.

It said following the demonetization of the old cotton banknotes, cash transactions should be conducted using the new polymer banknotes.

The new bank notes have been in circulation since June 2023.
