Biologist urges spear fishers to be cautious, following suspected deadly shark attack in Falmouth

Biologist Damion Whyte has urged spear fishers to be cautious when embarking on fishing trips.

This, in the aftermath of a Trelawny teenager being killed in a suspected shark attack.

The body of Jahmarie Reid, a student of the William Knibb High School was found on Tuesday floating about a mile from the shore, off a fishing beach in Falmouth.

His head and left hand were reportedly bitten off.

The student had left home on Monday to go fishing.

A search was launched for him when he did not return home and his body was found.

A post-mortem examination is to be conducted to determine the cause of Jahmarie’s death.

Commenting on the incident, Mr. Whyte urged fishers not to venture out by themselves.

He said most of the island’s beaches are safe for swimming despite the unfortunate incident.

Meantime, responding to reports that a whale was spotted at a beach in the western end of the island, Mr. Whyte said this is not unusual.
