Barcodes with maths questions to be set up at transportation centres to improve performance
Bar codes with mathematics questions are to be set up at transportation centres and others areas that students frequent, in an effort to improve their performance in the subject.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education Dr Kasan Troupe made the announcement, as she highlighted methods being used to tackle poor performance in Mathematics, by students at both the primary and secondary levels.
The methods follow this year’s sitting of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate, (CSEC) examinations, which resulted in only 39 percent of the students securing a passing grade.
According to Dr Troupe, the bar codes will promote learning on the go.
She said the initiatives are in line with recommendations by the Education Transformation Oversight Committee, (ETOC).
Among the recommendations are: extended learning hours and extended teaching support.
Dr Troupe explained that to extend learning hours, schools will have up to 5 hours of Mathematics each week, up from regulated 3 hours per week.
The ETOC recommendations are to be implemented in 56 secondary institutions.
