Bail extended for Dancehall artiste Kiprich
Dancehall artiste Kiprich had his bail extended when he appeared in court today, to answer to charges relating to controversial song lyrics.
The 45-year-old entertainer, whose given name is Marlon Plunkett, is facing charges of use of audio and audio-visual communication to promote criminal activity.
These stem from a song that he allegedly recorded and played across media platforms endorsing gang violence and paying tribute to members of the One Order Gang.
When the matter was called up in the St. Catherine Parish Court today, the prosecution explained that some documents are outstanding.
Defense lawyer Patrick Peterkin said he intends to challenge the charges laid against his client, citing constitutional breaches.
Peterkin said the concern is that the charges breach the freedom of expression provision, especially for entertainers.
When asked about reports that there was an increase in security presence at the court house, Peterkin said he was only told by a police officer that they were there because of Kiprich.
Kiprich is to return to court on May 20.
