Authorities to meet with Transport Stakeholders tomorrow

Representatives of the Transport Authority, Police and Island Traffic Authority will meet with stakeholders in the public transport sector, tomorrow.

This comes as public transport operators across several parishes withdrew their service today, leaving scores of commuters stranded.

The operators are expressing their anger about the move to suspend drivers’ licences, as well as the assignment of demerit points for certain infractions under the Road Traffic Act and its supporting regulations.

The operators say the stipulation is unfair.

In a statement this afternoon, the Transport Authority said the agencies will meet with sector leaders tomorrow to discuss these contentious issues and report to Transport Minister Daryl Vaz, the operators’ concerns for his consideration, based on the legislative review that is being undertaken of the Road Traffic Act and regulations.

The Authority’s Managing Director is urging Operators to reach out to their respective representatives with their concerns for discussion at the upcoming meeting.

In the meantime, the Authority is appealing to all PPV operators to allow good sense to prevail.
