Former Reggae Boyz head coach Heimir Hallgrimmson has been introduced as the new man in charge of the Republic of Ireland men’s national senior team.
The 57-year-old’s announcement ends an eight-month search for a permanent successor to Stephen Kenny.
Hallgrímsson, who resigned as coach of the Jamaican national senior team ahead of the Copa America Group B finale against Ecuador on June 30, was joint head coach of his native Iceland alongside Lars Lagerback when they stunned England to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2016 in France in the country’s first appearance at a major tournament
Hallgrimmson led the Reggae Boys in 26 matches, winning 11, losing 9 with six ending in draws.
He was then in sole control when Iceland reached the 2018 World Cup finals and achieved their highest ever Fifa World ranking of 18th during his time in charge.
Speaking about his appointment he said, “It is an honour to be appointed Head Coach of the Ireland Senior Men’s National Team.
“Ireland is rightly a proud footballing nation which has consistently produced talented players and enjoyed many memorable moments at major international tournaments.
“We have a young and exciting team that has genuine potential.
“I am looking forward to working closely with the players to help coach and guide them towards improved performances and results ensuring we qualify and compete at major tournaments on a regular basis.
“We have important and exciting games coming up in the UEFA Nations League later this year and a massive FIFA World Cup qualification campaign coming up next year.”
His first game in charge of Ireland takes place on September 7 against England.
