Jamaicans urged to remain vigilant as surveillance data show high COVID-19 transmission

Jamaicans are being urged to remain vigilant as surveillance data show high transmission of COVID-19 among the population.

According to the Health Ministry, in July, 176 COVID-19 cases were recorded, a 16% increase from the 152 recorded in June.

Kingston and St. Andrew accounted for 25% of the cases, and St. James and St. Catherine for 18% each.

Noting that thirteen COVID-19 deaths have been reported since the start of the year, the ministry continues to recommend vaccination as the best defence against severe illness and death associated with COVID-19.

It says doses of the Pfizer vaccine are available to the population.

The ministry says persons must remain at home if they are feeling ill, wear a mask to prevent the spread of respiratory droplets, practice proper sneezing and coughing etiquette and wash hands or use hand sanitizers.

Jamaicans travelling abroad are urged  to be diligent in practicing these infection prevention protocols.

The ministry adds that immunocompromised persons and those with chronic conditions are to pay particular attention to their care management.
