Former West Indies all-rounder Jamaican Andre Russell has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL) as a player, stating that he will be moving into a coaching role with the Kolkata Knights Riders starting next season.
A two time World T20 champion with the West Indies in 2012 and again in 2016, the 37 year old had been with the Knight Riders franchise as a player since the 2014 season and has lifted the trophy twice with the team.
He was also named as the Most Valuable player in the 2019 season.
In 139 IPL games in his career, Russell has scored 2,651 runs at a strike rate of 174.18 and has snared 123 wickets, being only the second player along with Ravindra Jadeja to have scored over 2,000 runs and taken over 100 wickets in the tournament.
Russell was released by the Knight Riders this year ahead of the 2026 IPL auctions which will take place on December 16 in Abu Dhabi.
Russell will be moving into the capacity as power coach.
He will continue to feature in other T20 franchise leagues around the world.
