Australian hockey player arrested in Paris for allegedly buying cocaine during Olympics
A member of Australia’s men’s Olympic hockey team has been arrested in Paris for allegedly buying cocaine.
Paris public prosecutor’s office confirmed a 28-year-old Australian, later identified as Tom Craig was arrested on Tuesday evening, local time, after allegedly being seen by police attempting to buy the illicit substance.
No charges have been laid.
The Paris prosecutor’s office said the Australian was arrested after officers witnessed an attempt to purchase cocaine in the 9th arrondissement.
“Police officers who witnessed a cocaine transaction at the foot of a building in the 9th arrondissement (of Paris), on the night of August 6th to 7th, apprehended the seller, born in December 2006, and the buyer, born in September 1995 in Australia and who is said to be a member of the Australian field hockey team.
“Given the quantities of drugs seized from the seller, the investigation has been entrusted to the anti-narcotics police.”
The Australian Olympic Committee has confirmed the Australian in custody was a member of the hockey team.
It said in a statement “No charges have been laid. The AOC is continuing to make enquiries and arrange support for the team member.”
The 28 year old Craig who won silver at Tokyo 2020 was part of the Australian men’s team that was knocked out of the Olympics after a loss to the Netherlands in the quarterfinals on Sunday.
