Attorney Bert Samuels says concern regarding Golding’s dual citizenship is not a constitutional problem, but rather a political issue
Amidst continued calls from some persons for Mark Golding to renounce his British citizenship, Attorney Bert Samuels has stressed that the concern regarding Golding’s dual citizenship is not a constitutional problem, but rather a political one.
Mr. Samuels made the clarification while speaking on IRIE FM’s Africa forum yesterday.
It follows Thursday’s announcement by aspiring Member of Parliament for St. Ann North East, Matthew Samuda, that he was renouncing his British citizenship and was calling on Golding to do the same.
Noting the dual citizenship debate, Mr. Samuels explained that Commonwealth citizens can participate in Jamaica’s Parliament.
Mr. Samuels noted further that the constitution does not address citizenship as it relates to the post of Prime Minister.
Meantime, Mr. Samuels said it would be advisable for Mr. Golding to address the citizenship issue before he faces the next general election.
