Airports remain operational and will close if a Hurricane Warning is issued

Airports in Jamaica remain operational and will only be closed if a hurricane warning is issued.

Transport Minister Daryl Vaz gave the update at a special press briefing on Tropical Storm Melissa this morning.

Jamaica is currently under a hurricane watch.

Vaz noted that airport closure times will depend on the projected path of the storm and conditions at each location.

He added that the airports have activated their emergency protocols.

In the meantime, MBJ Airports Limited, operators of the Donald Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay St. James, said it continues to closely monitor the projected path of Tropical Storm Melissa and its potential effect on the airport and airline operations.

The airport remains open and is operating normally at this time.

MBJ said the safety and well-being of passengers and staff remain top priority.

Passengers are urged to contact their airline for the latest flight information and to make changes to their reservations prior to visiting the airport.

MBJ said it will provide flight operation updates, including any extra flight operations or cancellations as well as updates on the impact of Tropical Storm Melissa on operations.
