Agriculture Minister urges consumers to be prudent as they shop for market produce, this Christmas
Agriculture Minister Floyd Green has urged consumers to be prudent as they shop for market produce, this Christmas season.
Speaking at a media briefing on the status of the agriculture sector, Mr. Green noted that despite the challenges faced this year, prices have mostly stabilized.
Mr. Green said there has been a decline, in the cost of some items, such as pineapples, while for others, such as pumpkin, papaya, and callaloo, the costs have been relatively stable.
Some items, such as cantaloupe, watermelon, tomatoes, and sweet peppers are facing a decline in production and subsequent price increases.
The Agriculture Minister said while the prices of some items are higher than normal, there are disparities between farm gate and retail prices.
He urged consumers to shop wisely, to avoid excessive price hikes.
Mr. Green added that prices also vary significantly across retail outlets.
