Agricultural Society projecting produce shortages & increased prices in coming weeks

Consumers could see an increase in agricultural produce prices in another week or two.

That is the projection from President of the Jamaica Agricultural Society (JAS) Lenworth Fulton.

This is as many of the nation’s farmers, especially those in St. Elizabeth are reeling from the effects of Hurricane Beryl.

Mr. Fulton warned that with many crops impacted by strong winds, Jamaicans will first see an excessively abundant supply, of goods in the market.

He said this will be followed by shortages, as many crops would have been damaged.  As a result, prices are expected to spike.

Though he understands that farmers have been devastated in the hurricane, Mr. Fulton is urging them to also remember that consumers have also been impacted.

Meanwhile, Mr. Fulton is calling on the Banana Board to release the banana catastrophe fund to help key industry players in St. Mary and Portland recover from the hurricane.
