Advocacy group ‘Freedom Imaginaries’ raises alarm over reports that there will be a mass deportation of Haitians tonight
Advocacy group Freedom Imaginaries says it believes there will be a mass deportation of Haitians tonight.
Attorney at law and founder of Freedom Imaginaries, Malene Alleyne, says reports to her are that Haitians who were being held at police lockups across the island, have been removed from those locations, and were being taken to Portland, from where they would be returned to Haiti.
The group today wrote to the national security minister and the Passport Immigration and Citizenship Agency (PICA) regarding 5 Haitians, who were being held at the freeport lock up in St. James, seeking asylum or refugee status for them.
Those Haitians who were detained earlier this month, appeared in court yesterday.
Ms Alleyne says, she has not had a response to the request, but has instead received reports, that other Haitian nationals were removed from lock ups in Hanover and St. Elizabeth.
IRIE FM News spoke with Ms. Alleyne shortly after she arrived at the lock up in St. James.
Ms. Alleyne continues to question how the Haitians are treated by the authorities.
This includes detention without charge, and in some cases, Haitian and Haitian-Jamaican families being separated, among other concerns.
